The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry published a study concluding that water with a little baking soda was better than a water-bleach mix or plain water for removing pesticides from apples.
The baking soda apparently helps break down pesticide molecules.
The baking soda-water mixture could be used to wash other produce. This could save money in two ways:
1) No longer buying veggie wash at the grocery store
2) Health care costs could decrease if people have cheap, easy ways to remove pesticides before consuming them.
Give it a try. Keep a small dish near your sink that you can easily access. Using your hands, a new toothbrush, or a produce brush, apply the baking soda & water, briefly scrub, and rinse.
