You Shouldn't Follow Elon Musk's $1/day Diet

During a Facebook conversation about the awe-inspiring Elon Musk, someone posted an article about Elon's years on a tight budget, and how he stretched $1 a day to eat in the 1980s.

The article examined a female's attempt to replicate his shoestring food budget today with $2/day (for inflation).

Feel free to have a look at how she did it, but it is not recommended! This first blog of the year hopes to remind readers that (in general) to prevent chronic disease, obesity, anemia, fatigue, immunity, and just maintain stamina day to day, it's so important to eat:

  • >5 servings of a variety of fruits & veggies each day

  • about 1/2 gram of protein per your weight in lbs (ie., if you weigh 140 lbs., eat about 70g or 6oz protein)

  • make up the rest in whole grains & unsaturated fats

This is hard to do on a low-income budget and impossible on $2/day. However, if you want help with planning your diet, or want individualized advice on stretching your dollars to get the most bang for you buck, FoCo Food Assistance has resources to help you.

Elon Musk is a genius, and he figured out how to get by for a year on a poor diet...just not in a healthy way (ironically, his mom is a dietitian). But he serves as a reminder that we can not only get through the hard times, but excel in life with patience and determination. Life is hard enough for our readers... if we can ease the food issues for you, please get in touch.
